Time goals (beat a time)

Chase a personal best — set a time to beat, log each attempt, and Steer tracks your fastest.

Some goals aren't about doing more — they're about doing it faster. A time goal is a metric goal where the target is a time to beat, and lower is better. Log each attempt and Steer keeps your best time, showing how close you are to the mark.

Good for:

  • Run a half-marathon under 1:45
  • Swim 50 m in under 30 seconds
  • Finish a 10k under 40 minutes
  • Beat your fastest commute

How a time goal works

A time goal flips the usual logic of a metric goal:

  • Your target is a time — say, 1 hour 45 minutes — and you're trying to get under it.
  • Each time you do the activity, you log how long it took.
  • Steer keeps your best (fastest) attempt as your progress — not a running total.
  • You've reached the goal the moment any attempt beats the target.

So if your target is 1:45 and your attempts come in at 1:58, 1:54 and 1:49, your best is 1:49 — you're 4 minutes away.

Note

Time goals are always one-off — there's a time to beat and you're chasing it. They don't repeat on a cadence, because the point is a personal best, not a per-week quota.

Creating one

When you create a metric goal, choose Time under Measured in. Then set the target time with the hours / minutes / seconds picker, and (optionally) a date you want to hit it by.

Logging an attempt

Tap Log time and enter how long it took with the same hours / minutes / seconds picker. Steer records the attempt, and if it's your fastest yet, your progress updates to match.

  • Every attempt is kept in your history, so you can watch your times come down.
  • Your pace forecast reads a time goal the right way round — getting closer to (under) your target counts as progress, and you're done as soon as you beat it.

Seeing your progress

On the goal card you'll see your best so far against the target — for example "Best 1:49:30 / 1:45:00" — with a message like "So close — 4:30 to shave off." Open View history to see every attempt charted over time, so a downward trend tells the story at a glance.
