Creating a goal
Start from a recipe or from scratch, set a target, and pick how often it repeats — mostly without typing.

Adding a goal takes a few taps. You can start from a ready-made recipe or build one from scratch, and Steer fills in sensible defaults so you rarely touch the keyboard.
The fastest way: a recipe
Tap the global "+" button (or New goal on the Goals screen). First, pick a category — Fitness, Finance, Learning, Home and more — to see matching recipe cards: popular goals with everything pre-filled:
- "Save €5,000"
- "Read 50 books"
- "Run 1,000 km"
- "Visit 3 countries"
Tap one, adjust the target if you like, and you're done. The recipe already set a sensible type, cadence, target and unit for you.
Tip
In a hurry? Use the search box on the first screen to look across every category at once — type "marathon" or "save" and the matching recipes surface instantly. Clear the search to go back to the categories.
Building one from scratch
If you'd rather start fresh, you'll make a few quick choices:
Name it and pick a category
A short title, and the category it belongs to (Fitness, Finance, Learning, …). Steer offers suggested titles as chips so you can often skip typing entirely.
Choose a type
Metric (a number you build toward) or Milestone (a yes/no outcome). Which should I pick?
Choose how it's measured
For a metric goal, pick Amount (a count), Money (your currency) or Time (a time to beat). For an amount, a small dropdown by the target lets you pick the unit — km, books, sessions, glasses — or type your own. More on time goals →
Set the cadence
Once, or recurring — daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly or yearly. More on cadence (Time goals are always one-off.)
Set the target
Dial in the number with a stepper, slider or quick chips — or, for a time goal, set the hours / minutes / seconds to beat. For recurring goals, the target is per period (e.g. "3 gym sessions per week").
Pick a date
For one-off goals, choose your deadline using relative chips ("Next week", "In 3 months") or the calendar.
That's it — your goal appears on the board with a pace forecast that starts working immediately.
Connecting a data source
Some goals can update themselves. When you create a goal like "Run 1,000 km", Steer can link it to a connected fitness app so every activity counts automatically.
Pro feature
Auto-updating metric goals from a fitness tracker (like Strava) is a Pro feature. See Fitness & trackers.
Editing later
Everything is editable. Open a goal and tap Edit to change the title, target, cadence or date.
Changing the target or cadence
If you change a goal's target or how often it repeats, Steer recalculates its history against the new rules — which can reshape past progress. When that happens, Steer warns you and often suggests completing the current goal and starting a fresh one instead, so your history stays clean.
The type (metric vs milestone) is fixed once a goal is created — if you need to switch, create a new goal.
