Steer Help

Finance overview

The forward glimpse — a plain-language verdict, a net-worth chart, and a clear picture of where your money goes.

2 min read

Budgets look backward; Steer looks forward. The Finance area projects your cash flow and net worth months — even years — ahead, so you can see what's coming and make decisions with confidence. And it's all manual-entry: you decide what's in there. Steer never connects to your bank in the background.

The three views

Finance is organised into clear views you can switch between:

Overview

A forward glimpse: a plain-language verdict, your net-worth chart, where your money goes, and golden-rule tips.

What the Overview tells you

The Overview is built to answer "how am I doing, and what's coming?" at a glance:

  • A plain-language verdict — a one-line read on your finances ("You're saving comfortably" / "Money looks tight in March"), not a wall of numbers.
  • A net-worth chart over the next 12 months, with a toggle between net worth and income vs expenses (income in green, expenses in red).
  • A cash-flow breakdown — what comes in and goes out, normalised so weekly, monthly and yearly items are comparable.
  • Golden-rule tips — your numbers checked against well-known guidelines (more below).
  • Assets & liabilities — the loans and investments behind your headline net-worth figure.

Golden-rule tips

Steer gently checks your finances against time-tested rules of thumb and tells you where you stand:

  • The 50/30/20 split (needs / wants / savings)
  • Keeping housing under 30% of income
  • The 28/36 guideline for debt
  • Saving at least 20%
  • Holding a 3–6 month emergency fund

These appear as friendly tips in a sliding panel — guidance, never judgement.

Everything is forward-aware

The projection already knows about the future you've told it about: next year's rent increase, a subscription price hike, your loan repayments, your investment growth. That's what makes it a forecast rather than a snapshot.

Free vs Pro

Your baseline projection — cash flow and net worth — is free. Creating simulations to test what-ifs is a Pro feature.
